I received a package in the mail Thursday from Tom at The Angels, In Order . . . with his assistance I was able to complete my 2013 Topps Series 1 base set. Here is the card that had been eluding me –
A little about Henry from the back of his card –
“Henry was added to the 40-man roster following the 2011 season, when he batted over .300 for the fourth straight year. He got off to a scorching start at Double-A Pensacola in ’12, raking .348 over 33 games to warrant a promotion to Louisville. The switch-hitting Rodriguez would finish the year in a Reds uniform, primarily serving as pinch-hitter.”
In 2013, Henry has played in 18 games with 12 hits in 33 at bats (.364 average).
I want to also thank to Jeff (2×3 Heroes), Nick (Dime Boxes), Bryan (Golden Rainbow Cards), Roger (Sportscard Mask-a-Rade) and Douglas Fraser for their assistance in completing the base set. I was overwhelmed with generosity and want to make sure I return the favor. I am pretty sure I have sent Jeff, Bryan and Roger some cards . . . please correct me if I am wrong. I am going through some old cards for you Nick, looking for some cards to add to your plethora of collections! Tom yours is coming soon also so be on the look out.
Tom also included some inserts I needed. SCORE!
From the back of the card – “Dickey’s signature knuckleball required plenty of physical practice, but a mental routine helps him unlock its true magic. Just before he releases the ball, R.A. reminds himself to “surrender to the pitch” – a Zen-like acceptance of its unpredictability.”
From the back of the card – “If Musial was going to overtake Babe Ruth as the all-time MLB leader in extra-base hits, he’d have to do it at the age of 42 in his 1963 swansong. The suspense was brief. His home run on May 8 was his 1,357th extra-sacks knock – a total he’d extend to 1,377.”
From the back of the card – “The 400-home run fraternity grew to 50 on August 18, 2012, when Dunn drove a 2-2 pitch from Tom Collins over the left-center wall in Kansas City. He and Paul Konerko became the first teammates to reach that milestone in the same season.”
From the back of the card – “For Rodriguez to knock Barry Bonds off the throne as the all-time home run king, he will have to average 29 longballs per year through 2016 – his age-40 season. That’s a total that Alex reached easily in 15 consecutive seasons from 1996-2010.”
From the back of the card – “Longoria is hot on the trail of the Tampa Bay career home run record, situated 33 short of Carlos Pena’s total of 163 as the 2013 season opens. That’s exactly how many Evan hit in ’09. He also needs a more formidable 135 to pass Carl Crawford in RBI.”
Had to stop by Wal-Mart again this morning for some snacks for my daughters soccer game tonight. I happened to go through the line near the baseball cards again!!! They had one lonely jumbo pack of 2013 Topps Opening Day on the rack so I had to buy it . . . I am glad I did as I needed almost 50% (11 base set and 2 inserts) of the cards in the pack. This brings my base set to 90% complete, only need 22 more. I am still below 50% with most of the inserts still though.
Here are some of the highlights –
I did not need the Buster Posey (#1) for my base set so he can be added to my small but growing Posey collection.
WOW . . . three Mike Trout cards, base set (#27), Play Hard (#PH-3), and Superstar Celebrations (#SC-23) and I needed all three!
Look who else, Yu Darvish (#165) Topps All-Star Rookie to go along with the Trout Topps All-Star Rookie . . . SCORE!
I also added Ryan Braun (#8), Yovani Gallardo (#21), Adrian Gonzalez (#87), Andrew McCutchen (#102), A.J. Burnett (#128), Neftali Perez (#181), Kyle Seager (#196), R.A. Dickey (#213), and Kris Medlen (#216).
All in all I think it was a great pack to open at 7:00 AM and a start to a pretty good day!

So the wife asks if I can go to Wal-Mart to pick up some stuff she forget when she was grocery shopping . . . reluctantly I agreed. 🙂 It has been a little while since I bought any packs of cards and they had some packs of 2013 Topps Opening Day near the register so I added a few to my cart. I was still about 20% from completing the base set so I figured if I bought two Jumbo Packs I should be able to score a few I needed and have a little fun opening some packs.
I ended up pulling about 1/4 of the base set cards I needed and a few inserts I needed as well.
Here are some of my highlights –
Some RC’s I was missing –
I am always excited to pull a Topps All-Star Rookie, especially one I need –
A few more of my highlights –
When is Alex Rodriguez going to play? He currently has 647 career HRs, which puts him 115 behind Barry Bonds’ all-time record of 762. If I did my math correct using his average of 1 HR every 3.9 games in his career it would take him another 448.5 games to tie the record. He turns 38 in July, which means when healthy and playing he needs to play into his 40’s (about 2 3/4 more seasons) to have a chance.
Here are my current 2013 Topps Series 1 and Opening Day needs. I have acquired quite a few doubles also so if you are looking for some to complete a base set or team set you can email me at email@example.com.
Thanks for checking out my blog and I love to read comments if you have any related to this post or anything else! Have a great day!
After coming home from my son’s baseball practice tonight I realized I had not checked the mail today, maybe there are cards in there??? Yes there was!!! I got two packages, one from Bryan Jones at Golden Rainbow Cards and the other from Roger Mask at Sportscard Mask-a-Rade. There were a variety of base set cards and inserts (Calling Cards, Chasing the Dream and Chasing History). It is real late and I wanted to share some of the cards but I am just too tired to scan any cards so what I will do is the show the ONE card I need to complete the base set –
So just one card to complete the base set and then I need to finish the inserts!
I think it is time to get some 9-pocket pages and a binder and get this set put into a binder to display. A trip to the card store is on the agenda for tomorrow.
Thanks again Bryan and Roger and keep an eye on your mailbox!
After a few Blaster Boxes and numerous Jumbo Packs and a few trades sprinkled in I am just 5 cards short of the base set, not counting the SP versions. Here are the elusive five!
I am sure it will be no time before I track these guys down! Can you help?
